Click-to-WhatsApp ads: how to know what a lead actually cost you

A landing page loses most people before the form. An ad that opens a chat keeps them, and if the chat opens a CRM deal, cost per lead becomes a real number.

A click-to-WhatsApp ad opens a conversation instead of a landing page. That removes the form, which is where most people leave, and it puts the lead somewhere a person can answer in seconds. The part most businesses miss is the second half: counting what each lead cost, and what it turned into.

The setup that makes the number real

  1. Run the ad from your own Meta ad account. The spend and the invoice stay yours, and the campaign name travels with every lead that clicks.
  2. Let a bot ask the first questions. City, budget, requirement — with buttons, saved to contact fields.
  3. Open a deal automatically. An "ad lead received" automation creates a CRM deal with the campaign as its source and assigns an owner.
  4. Close deals with a reason. Won or lost, and why.

Now the report writes itself: this campaign, this spend, this many leads, this many deals, this much revenue. Cost per lead and cost per closed deal, by campaign, without a spreadsheet.

Audiences before creative

The creative matters less than who sees it. Before you design anything:

  • Upload your buyers as a custom audience and build a lookalike from them. That is the audience most likely to buy.
  • Upload existing customers as an exclusion. Paying to acquire someone you already have is the most common waste in a small ad account.

Start small and short

A few hundred rupees a day, one audience, one week. A big launch tells you less, because when several things change at once you cannot tell what caused what. After a week you know the cost per lead for that audience, and you scale the one that worked.

Reply in seconds, not hours

The lead who clicked is on their phone, now. The bot's first reply should land within seconds; the person's within minutes. A lead answered the next morning has usually already spoken to someone else. This is the whole reason the ad opens a chat rather than a form.

What to watch weekly

  • Cost per lead by campaign.
  • Share of leads the bot qualified as a fit.
  • Cost per closed deal — the only number that decides next month's budget.
